What's Open Over Easter in Spain 2026? Supermarkets, Shops, Restaurants and Pharmacies

Easter Public Holidays in Spain 2026

Easter is a big deal in Spain, and it comes with a cluster of public holidays that affect opening hours across the country. Here is what you need to know before heading out to shop, eat, or pick up a prescription.

Semana Santa 2026 runs from Palm Sunday (March 29th) through to Easter Monday (April 6th). The key dates affecting businesses are:

  • Maundy Thursday, April 2nd — public holiday in all regions except Catalonia and the Community of Valencia
  • Good Friday, April 3rd — national public holiday across all Spanish regions
  • Easter Monday, April 6th — regional holiday in Catalonia, the Community of Valencia, La Rioja, Navarre, and the Basque Country

Residents in La Rioja, Navarre, and the Basque Country get both Thursday and Monday off, giving them a five-day puente (long weekend). Those in Catalonia and Valencia get Good Friday and Easter Monday but not Thursday.

The general rule: if it is a national or regional public holiday where you live, most shops and supermarkets in that region will be closed — or open with significantly reduced hours.

Supermarkets

Mercadona

Mercadona will be closed on Maundy Thursday (except in Catalonia and Valencia, where Thursday is not a holiday) and closed on Good Friday. In some regions, even where Thursday is a holiday, some Mercadona branches may open until noon — check your local store. Saturday April 4th Mercadona will be open across Spain on its normal hours: 9am to 9:30pm.

Carrefour

Carrefour's policy varies by region and store format. Most larger Carrefour hypermarkets will open on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in some regions, but others will be closed. Carrefour Express smaller convenience stores are likely to be open on all days throughout Easter. Check your local branch before travelling.

Lidl

Lidl will open some stores on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday but close others, depending on the region. Where open, some branches may have reduced hours until 3pm. Check the Lidl store finder for your specific location.

Aldi

Aldi closes on regional and national public holidays. Expect closures on Maundy Thursday (except in Catalonia and Valencia) and Good Friday. Check the Aldi store finder for local details.

Día

Día is a franchise chain, so holiday hours vary by individual store. Normal opening hours are 9am–9pm; on public holidays some branches may close at 3pm.

Consum

Consum closes most stores on public holidays. In Catalonia, some Consum branches remain open on Good Friday and Easter Monday — check your nearest store.

Pharmacies

Whether your local farmacia is open over Easter depends on where you live and the individual branch's policy. Most pharmacies will operate on reduced "holiday" hours on Maundy Thursday — typically 9am to 2pm. On Good Friday, many will be closed entirely, though on-duty farmacias de guardia (emergency pharmacies) remain open 24 hours — look for the green cross sign or check online for your area's duty rota.

Bars and Restaurants

Bars and restaurants set their own holiday hours. Your local neighbourhood bar may well be closed over the holiday days, but larger restaurants — particularly in towns with Easter processions and tourist footfall — are likely to stay open on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Saturday April 4th and Easter Sunday should see most restaurants operating normally.

Fast food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King will be open throughout Easter 2026 in Spain.

General Shops

Small independent shops — ferreterías (hardware stores), clothing boutiques, and the like — will generally be closed on public holidays. However:

  • Fruterías (greengrocers) and locally run corner shops in cities often stay open on public holidays
  • Estancos (tobacco stores) will almost certainly be closed, except possibly in major city centres
  • Bakeries, confectionery shops, florists, newsagents, petrol stations, and convenience stores are legally exempt from normal commercial opening restrictions and can choose to open on public holidays
  • Shops in areas of significant tourist activity are also legally permitted to open — meaning that in major cities and coastal tourist areas, you are likely to find plenty of shops open for at least part of the day

The Practical Advice

The safest approach is to do your main supermarket shop before Thursday April 2nd, while everything is running normally. Stock up on anything you might need over the long weekend — particularly if you are in a region where both Thursday and Friday are public holidays.

If you do need to shop on a holiday, your best bets are Carrefour Express convenience stores, larger supermarkets in tourist areas, and greengrocers or corner shops in city centres.
