Greggs Is Opening in Spain for the First Time in Almost 20 Years — at Tenerife South Airport

Greggs Lands in Spain

Greggs is opening its first overseas bakery in almost 20 years — and it's coming to Tenerife South Airport, in the departures area, timed to open before the summer holiday season. The British bakery chain's last international venture was in Belgium, which closed around 2006.

The choice of location is no accident. Tenerife South handles approximately 13 million passengers a year, of whom roughly 50% are British — making it one of the most concentrated audiences of Greggs' core customer base anywhere outside the UK.

The Menu — Including One Spanish Twist

The outlet will serve the classic Greggs range: sausage rolls, hot bakes, sandwiches and sweet treats. One new product has been created specifically for the Spanish market: a Spanish Omelette Roll — a nod to the tortilla española that is a staple of Spanish cuisine.

A Test, Not a Rollout

Greggs CEO Roisin Currie was careful to frame this as an experiment rather than the start of a confirmed expansion: "Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting."

The outlet is operated through a partnership with travel retailer Lagardère Travel Retail. No further locations have been announced.

Part of a Broader British Brand Push into Spanish Airports

Greggs arrives as part of a growing trend of British brands entering the Spanish airport market. JD Wetherspoon opened its first Spanish pub at Alicante-Elche Airport earlier in 2026, with two more planned in Barcelona before the end of the year. For millions of British tourists, the familiar sight of a Greggs counter in the departures lounge may now be the last thing they see before their flight home.
