Torrevieja Unveils Plans for New Foodie Market to Rival Madrid and Seville
A New Gastronomic Hub for Torrevieja
Torrevieja is preparing to launch a new gastronomic market designed to compete with similar establishments in Madrid and Seville. The city council has awarded a ten-year concession to Origen Murcia, a company with over two decades of experience managing comparable projects.
What to Expect
The market will occupy more than 2,000 square metres across the ground floor and mezzanine of the La Plasa building. It will combine traditional fresh produce vendors with upscale gourmet food offerings, alongside dining and beverage facilities.
Crucially, the space aims to function throughout the day — not just mornings — creating continuous activity and economic opportunity.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón stated: "We want it to stop being a space that closed at midday and become an active meeting point throughout the day."
Investment and Jobs
The project is expected to bring:
- Approximately €1 million in private investment
- Roughly 230 jobs
Existing market traders have been offered preferential terms to participate in the new establishment, ensuring continuity for local vendors.
When Will It Open?
Construction is proceeding on schedule, with opening anticipated before the end of 2026 or early 2027.
The model has already proven successful in Madrid, Seville, and Murcia — and for Torrevieja's large expat and tourist community, it promises to become a major draw.
