Holidaymaker, 24, Rescued After Nearly Drowning in Late-Night Torrevieja Swim
Rescued 50 Metres from Shore
A 24-year-old female tourist narrowly escaped drowning after entering the sea for a late-night swim off the Torrevieja coastline in Alicante province in the early hours of March 31. The woman, who was on holiday with a friend, became trapped approximately 50 metres from shore in a notoriously difficult-to-access rocky location, unable to return to land as conditions deteriorated around her.
Strong winds, poor visibility and choppy seas made her situation increasingly desperate. A witness spotted her struggling and contacted emergency services.
Guardia Civil Officer Enters the Water
Officers from the Guardia Civil attended the scene. In a significant act of personal risk, one officer entered the water himself to reach the woman, while a colleague coordinated additional police units and emergency medical personnel on shore. The officer sustained minor injuries from the rough sea and rocky terrain during the rescue.
The woman was in a state of severe distress and physical weakness when pulled from the water.
ICU Admission and Recovery
She was transported to Torrevieja Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) suffering from hypothermia, which subsequently developed into pneumonia. The incident occurred in the early hours and the time spent in cold water had taken a serious toll.
More than a month later, she had recovered fully and was at home. Her name was not disclosed.
A Reminder of the Risks
Spain records approximately 500 drowning deaths annually. In 2025 alone, over 20,000 rescue operations were conducted during water activities across the country. Late-night swimming — particularly in unguarded, rocky coastal areas — carries significant risk, even in conditions that may appear calm from the shore.
The Torrevieja coastline includes stretches of rocky terrain that are extremely difficult to access and exit, especially in darkness or when sea conditions change suddenly.
