Spanish Architects' Award-Winning Museum in Norway Named World's Most Beautiful — Now Open for First Full Season
World's Most Beautiful Museum Opens for First Full Season
An award-winning art gallery designed by Spanish architects has finally opened for its first full season. Norway's Kunstsilo museum, designed by Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, BAX Studios, and Mendoza Partida, has collected multiple prestigious prizes over the past year.
The museum was named World's Most Beautiful Museum at the Prix Versailles awards in December and also won Spain's Architects Association prize. The converted 1930s grain silo is expected to become a significant global attraction this year.
A Stunning Industrial Transformation
Located on the waterfront in Kristiansand, Norway's most southerly city, the industrial building's renovation has been widely praised for its innovative use of glass, steel, and timber.
The original grain silo was built in 1935 and has a history of recognition — its initial architects won an award just four years after its construction. The renovation has revitalised the coastal city of 116,000 residents.
The design strategy involved inserting glass, steel, and timber to allow natural light into the concrete silos. This approach enabled the architects to create exhibition spaces running both vertically and horizontally, with communal areas offering panoramic vistas.
The Architect's Vision
Magnus Wåge of Mestres Wåge Arquitectes explained: "The silo becomes a sculpture that the museum is organised in and around." He added: "This radical intervention reveals the expressive power of the original building."
Visitors enter an open atrium where the silos have been cut away, revealing a basilica-like central space that has been described as revolutionary for the Scandinavian art scene.
World's Largest Nordic Modernist Art Collection
The gallery houses the world's largest collection of Nordic Modernist art, featuring Norwegian artists Johannes Rian and Reidar Aulie among others. This season will showcase 600 works of modern art across various exhibitions.
