An Atlantic Storm Is on the Way

An Atlantic storm is heading directly for Spain and forecasters are warning of heavy rain, hailstorms and thunderstorms across much of the country over the coming days. A narrow trough is already causing instability on Thursday before the main system arrives from Friday onwards. Here is what to expect day by day.

Thursday, May 7 — Storms Develop Across the Mainland

Thursday brings increasing cloud cover from the early hours, with showers and thunderstorms developing across much of the mainland. The most intense storms are expected in Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Murcia, the Valencian Community, Aragon, eastern Castilla y León, La Rioja and the Cantabrian Mountains.

Yellow weather warnings are in place across large areas for storms, hail and strong wind gusts. The most severe conditions are expected during the afternoon, particularly around Albacete, Cuenca, inland Valencia, Alicante and Teruel, where large hail is a real possibility.

An orange alert has been activated for coastal areas of southern Valencia and northern Alicante, where significant rainfall is also expected. Temperatures will drop notably in the southeast — particularly in Cuenca, Albacete, Murcia and Almería.

Friday, May 8 — Atlantic Storm Arrives

The Atlantic storm begins making its presence felt on Friday as it approaches the western coast. Showers and storms will be most significant in the northeast during the morning before spreading inland and intensifying during the afternoon, with the area around the Iberian System particularly affected.

Maximum temperatures will fall below 20°C across most of Castilla y León and the western Cantabrian region. Seville in the far southwest remains the warmest spot, potentially reaching 27°C.

Saturday, May 9 — Front Sweeps Across the Country

An occluded front moves in from the west in the early hours of Saturday, bringing locally heavy rainfall to Cáceres, Badajoz, Huelva, Seville and Cádiz. Storms will develop along the front, with the coastal provinces of Andalucía and Murcia in line for intense activity.

As the day progresses, showers and thunderstorms will spread to the rest of the country. Madrid could see a temperature fall of up to 5°C compared to earlier in the week.

Sunday, May 10 — Eastern Spain Escapes the Worst

Heavy rain continues across Extremadura and parts of Andalucía on Sunday, extending to Toledo, Madrid and Castilla y León as the day progresses. The eastern third of the mainland and the Balearic Islands are the exception — mostly clear or partly cloudy skies are expected there, with temperatures rising noticeably in the Valencian Community.

For Costa Blanca Residents

Thursday and Friday bring the highest risk for the Alicante area, with the orange alert covering coastal areas on Thursday and further showers possible into Friday. The weekend should see gradual improvement along the eastern coast, with Sunday looking increasingly settled. Stay off beaches while warnings are active and monitor Aemet updates closely.
