Yellow Alerts Active: Snow Down to 600m, Mud Rain and Heavy Storms Hit Multiple Spanish Provinces
Snow Down to 600 Metres
AEMET has activated yellow alerts across multiple Spanish provinces as a dramatic weather shift brings snow, heavy rain, thunderstorms and mud rain to large parts of the country.
Snow levels are forecast to drop to just 600 metres in the Cantabrian Mountains and Soria province — relatively low altitudes for this time of year. Accumulations exceeding 5cm are expected by Sunday morning in elevated areas.
Where Is Affected?
- Snow: Cantabrian Mountains, Soria province, central interior zones
- Heavy rain and storms: Eastern mainland, Valencian Community, parts of Andalucía
- Rough seas and strong winds: Coastal areas across multiple regions
- Mud rain: Eastern and southern regions — caused by Saharan dust particles (calima) mixing with thunderstorms
Flooding Risk
Heavy rain with intense bursts will hit eastern and southern regions. Saturated ground conditions increase the risk of flooding, particularly in the Valencian Community where drainage systems may be overwhelmed during sudden downpours.
Travel Warnings
Conditions present multiple hazards:
- Mountain roads at higher altitudes could become hazardous due to snow and ice
- Secondary routes face particular risk during heavy downpours
- Air delays are possible near major airports
- Road conditions can change rapidly in affected areas
What's Next?
Instability may persist into early next week before gradually easing, though AEMET continues monitoring and may issue updated alerts. If you're travelling this weekend — particularly through mountain areas or the eastern coast — check AEMET forecasts before setting out and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
