Historic Moment: Three Spanish Films Compete for the Palme d'Or

Spanish filmmakers have secured a historic presence at the Cannes Film Festival, with three films competing for the Palme d'Or — something that hasn't happened for decades:

  • Pedro AlmodóvarBitter Christmas (Amarga Navidad)
  • Rodrigo SorogoyenThe Beloved
  • Javier Ambrossi and Javier CalvoThe Black Ball

In total, 21 films are in contention, including works by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (who already holds a 2018 Palme d'Or). The Spanish showing marks a remarkable moment for the country's cinema on the world stage.

Spain Reopens Embassy in Iran

Spain will reopen its embassy in Tehran — closed in March due to the war — following the ceasefire reached between the US, Israel and Iran.

Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said he had given instructions for Spain's ambassador to return to Tehran and "contribute through all the means available to us to efforts for peace."

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticised the move on X, accusing Spain of acting "with no shame" — but the Spanish government's position reflects its broader push for diplomatic engagement in the region.

Irish Mob Boss Arrested in Lanzarote

Spanish police have arrested a senior member of Ireland's notorious Hutch criminal gang on the island of Lanzarote in a joint operation with Irish forces.

The suspect, held under a European arrest warrant, is described as "the leader of the organisation's intelligence cell" who also ran its money transfers alongside his father. He is a close associate of the group's boss Gerry "The Monk" Hutch, who was himself arrested in Spain in 2021.

Spain's Canary Islands and Mediterranean coast continue to attract foreign fugitives — many of them Irish and British — drawn by the lifestyle and proximity to international drug trafficking routes.

15°C Temperature Drop This Weekend

After a week of dramatic temperature swings — Ciudad Real went from 10.5°C to 29.5°C in a single day — Spain is bracing for another sharp change.

Temperatures will hit 30°C in several areas on Friday but then plummet by up to 15°C on Saturday and Sunday. In parts of Castilla y León, Sunday's highs could reach only around 10°C, while Madrid, Guadalajara and Cuenca will see temperatures around 15°C.

If you're planning outdoor activities this weekend, pack layers — the contrast with Friday's warmth will be dramatic.
