Spain's Next National Holiday Is Just Weeks Away — And It Falls on a Friday
A Perfect Long Weekend
Spain's next national holiday is just weeks away — and it lands perfectly for a long weekend. Labour Day (Día del Trabajo) falls on Friday 1 May 2026, giving most workers a three-day weekend without needing to take any extra time off.
A Fixed National Holiday
Labour Day is one of Spain's fixed national holidays, meaning it applies uniformly across all autonomous communities. Unlike regional holidays that vary from place to place, everyone in Spain gets this one off.
Under Spain's Workers' Statute, employees are entitled to at least 14 paid public holidays annually — a mix of national, regional and local dates.
What to Expect
Long weekends in Spain typically mean:
- Busy coastal towns and popular cities seeing a surge in domestic tourism
- Transport filling up quickly — book trains and flights early if you're travelling
- Shops and offices may operate on reduced hours or close entirely on Friday
- Restaurants and beaches will be busier than usual, especially in good weather
Regional Notes
Madrid celebrates its own regional holiday on May 2 (Día de la Comunidad de Madrid), but in 2026 it falls on a Saturday — so it won't extend the weekend for most workers.
Before Labour Day, Valencia observes San Vicente Ferrer on April 13, and Aragón and Castilla y León mark Saint George celebrations on April 23.
