Spain's Health Ministry Issues Warning on Homeopathy After Report Finds No Evidence It Works

Official: Homeopathy No Better Than Placebo

Spain's Ministry of Health has issued a formal warning about homeopathic products after the country's medicines regulator published a damning technical assessment. The AEMPS (Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios — Spain's equivalent of the MHRA or FDA) concluded on April 21, 2026 that homeopathy lacks any scientifically proven therapeutic effectiveness.

The AEMPS report examined dozens of systematic studies and found that "any apparent benefits disappear in more rigorous clinical trials" — the hallmark finding of a placebo effect rather than a genuine therapeutic one.

The Science Behind the Warning

The AEMPS report goes beyond simply saying homeopathy doesn't work — it explains why it cannot work at the dilutions commonly used in homeopathic products.

Homeopathic preparations are typically diluted to levels described in the system as "12 CH" or higher. At 12 CH, the AEMPS states that "it is mathematically impossible for a single molecule of the original substance to remain" in the solution. The active ingredient, if there ever was one, is no longer present. What remains is effectively water — or water mixed with sugar in the case of homeopathic tablets.

The report's conclusions are consistent with the scientific consensus in countries including the UK, Germany, Australia and the United States, where official health bodies have reached the same finding: homeopathy performs no better than placebo in properly controlled clinical trials.

Why the Warning Matters

The Ministry of Health's concern is not simply academic. Authorities specifically warned that replacing proven medical treatments with homeopathic products poses a real health risk — not because homeopathy itself causes harm, but because of what it displaces.

When someone with a condition that requires medical treatment uses homeopathy instead of, or as a substitute for, evidence-based medicine:

  • Diagnosis may be delayed — conditions that are treatable in their early stages can progress undetected
  • Symptoms may worsen while the underlying cause goes untreated
  • Patients may develop false reassurance that their condition is being managed when it is not

The risks are most acute in serious conditions — cancer, infections, cardiovascular disease — where delays in proper treatment can be life-threatening.

How Many People Use Homeopathy in Spain

Despite the lack of scientific evidence, homeopathy is widely used in Spain. Approximately 5% of the population — over 2 million people — used homeopathic products within the past year. For context, that is more than the population of Madrid.

However, the AEMPS report notes that the majority of users take homeopathic products alongside conventional medicine, typically for mild symptoms — rather than as a primary or exclusive treatment. The highest-risk pattern is using homeopathy as a replacement for medical care for serious conditions, which appears to be a minority of users.

Homeopathy Remains Legal in Spanish Pharmacies

The AEMPS warning does not change the legal status of homeopathic products. They remain legal and available for sale in Spanish pharmacies. What they cannot do — under existing labelling regulations — is make unproven therapeutic claims. The rules require that homeopathic products are not marketed as treatments for specific conditions without scientific evidence.

Whether that rule is consistently enforced is a separate question. The fact that the Ministry has issued this warning suggests concerns that consumers are not always getting a clear picture of what the evidence actually says.

What to Do If You Use Homeopathic Products

The advice from the Ministry is straightforward:

  • Do not replace prescribed medication with homeopathic alternatives without discussing it with your doctor first
  • If you have a condition you are managing with homeopathy, speak to your GP (médico de cabecera) to ensure it is being properly assessed
  • For mild, self-limiting symptoms — a cold, minor aches — the placebo effect may provide some subjective relief and the products are unlikely to cause harm; but do not rely on them for anything serious
  • In Spain, if you are unsure about a product's evidence base, ask your pharmacist — they are trained healthcare professionals and are legally required to give honest advice
