Sierra Nevada Records One of Its Biggest Easters Ever — 78,000 Skiers Hit the Slopes
Third-Biggest Semana Santa on Record
Over 78,000 skiers hit the Sierra Nevada's slopes this Easter week, marking the resort's third-biggest Semana Santa on record.
Blue skies and brilliant snow — boosted by storms earlier in the year — drew 78,900 skiers carving through 100km of open pistes across the holiday period. A further 4,360 people rode the resort's lifts to spectate Spanish Championship events and dine at popular mountain restaurants, while 11,000 people took part in non-skiing activities like sledging.
Spanish Championships on the Mountain
The Sierra's mountains hosted three Spanish Championship events over the weekend:
- Snowboardcross
- Skicross
- Rails and Slopestyle
The competitions showcased the best homegrown and international talent, adding an extra draw for visitors beyond the regular skiing.
Spring Season Is Just Getting Started
Following the huge Easter week, the Sierra Nevada's spring season officially kicks off on April 6. With 70km of piste still open, excellent snow conditions and more events ahead, it's far from too late to hit the slopes. Upcoming highlights include:
- Ultra Sierra Nevada — April 10
- Andalusian Ski Mountaineering Championship — April 12
The resort will remain open for skiing, sledging and enjoying the mountain scenery until May 3.
A Reminder of Spain's Skiing Credentials
For many expats and visitors, Spain is all about beaches and sunshine — but the Sierra Nevada, located just a short drive from Granada in Andalucía, is one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts and regularly delivers excellent conditions well into spring. If you've never considered skiing in Spain, there's still time this season to give it a try.
