Mercadona Changes Home Delivery Rules — Some Shoppers Left Without Service
Delivery Discontinued at Select Branches from May 7
Mercadona is withdrawing home delivery services at a number of its stores across Spain, effective May 7, 2026. The move is leaving some shoppers without a service they had come to rely on — particularly elderly residents, families with young children, and those without access to private transport in more rural or urbanisation-based communities.
The previous delivery fee was €6.50 per order. Customers unsure whether their local branch is affected are advised to visit the store directly with their address or postcode to confirm the situation.
Who Is Most Affected
Among the areas that have previously experienced disruption to Mercadona delivery services are Camposol, Hacienda del Alamo and several surrounding urbanisations in the Murcia region. These communities often have limited access to alternative supermarkets and residents have expressed concern about being left without a convenient grocery delivery option.
For expats living in more isolated urbanisations — where public transport is infrequent or car ownership is not universal — the withdrawal of home delivery represents a significant practical difficulty.
Part of the Store 9 Modernisation
The changes come as part of Mercadona's large-scale Store 9 modernisation programme, a €3.7 billion investment that is being rolled out across approximately 1,700 stores nationwide. The updated store format introduces expanded fresh produce sections, food preparation workshops, and a broader range of ready-to-eat meals.
Mercadona has not provided a comprehensive public list of which branches are affected by the delivery changes, which has added to the confusion for customers trying to plan their shopping arrangements.
What Shoppers Can Do
Those who previously used Mercadona home delivery and are uncertain whether the service continues at their nearest branch should:
- Visit their local Mercadona store and ask staff directly
- Check the Mercadona website or app for delivery availability at their address
- Explore alternative delivery services operating in their area
The supermarket chain has not announced a timeline for restoring delivery at affected locations.
