Listeria Alert: Tora Smoked Salmon Recalled in Spain — Don't Eat It If You Have It at Home

April 3, 2026 2 min read 0 views

What Has Been Found?

Spanish food safety authorities have issued a warning after Listeria monocytogenes was found in Tora brand smoked salmon. The alert was reported by Murcia's regional health authorities through Spain's rapid information exchange system (SCIRI).

The message from authorities is clear: if you have this salmon at home, don't eat it.

Which Products Are Affected?

The affected batch has a best-before date of April 7, 2026 and comes in pre-sliced packs. However, authorities have warned that other Tora smoked salmon products made under the same conditions are also thought to be at risk.

The Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (AESAN) advises anyone with these products to check their kitchens and dispose of them safely. For the full list of affected products and batch numbers, check the AESAN website directly.

Why Is Listeria Dangerous?

Listeria can cause a serious infection called listeriosis, which can be particularly dangerous for:

  • Pregnant women — it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or serious infection in newborns
  • Newborn babies
  • Older adults
  • Anyone with a weakened immune system

Symptoms typically include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhoea. In more serious cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, causing headaches, stiff neck, confusion and even seizures.

What Should You Do?

If you have Tora smoked salmon at home, check the best-before date on the packaging. If it matches the affected batch or you're unsure, do not consume it — dispose of it safely. Authorities are also reminding everyone to follow basic food safety rules at home, especially with ready-to-eat products like smoked fish.
