Accident on Popular Tourist Route

Three Irish cyclists were seriously injured on Wednesday after being struck by a car on a popular tourist route in the south of Alicante province.

The accident happened shortly after 3.30pm on the CV-925 within the Orihuela municipality, close to the village of Torremendo at kilometre point 9.

The injured cyclists, aged 56, 59 and 62, were part of a group of six. The exact circumstances behind the collision have not been revealed, and no details about the motorist involved have been disclosed — including whether they were located or arrested.

Injuries and Hospital Treatment

  • Two cyclists were admitted to Orihuela's Vega Baja Hospital with multiple injuries
  • A third was taken to Vinalopó Hospital in Elche with a head injury
  • A fourth cyclist was treated at the scene for minor injuries

The Guardia Civil, Orihuela Policía Local and two ambulances were dispatched to the area.

A Known Danger Spot

The CV-925 allows people to go around La Pedrera reservoir between Torremendo and Vistabella. It's a scenic route that attracts a high volume of traffic — including cyclists and bikers.

Speed bumps were installed on the road in 2022 to stop illegal motorcycle races and improve general road safety. Last year, a motorcyclist was killed on the same stretch of road.

The accident is a reminder of the risks faced by cyclists on Spain's roads, particularly on popular routes shared with motor vehicles. Cycling groups have long called for better infrastructure and greater enforcement to protect riders on busy tourist routes.
