How to Renew Your Digital Certificate in Spain: Step-by-Step Guide
What Is a Digital Certificate in Spain?
A digital certificate (certificado digital) is essential software that allows Spanish residents to complete official administrative processes online. With it, you can file taxes, pay fines, access health records, and log onto the social security system — all without having to visit a physical office.
It's one of the most useful tools for navigating Spanish bureaucracy, saving you countless trips to government offices and long queues.
How Long Does a Digital Certificate Last?
Your digital certificate remains valid for four years before it needs to be renewed. You can renew it online in most cases, which is far simpler than the original application process.
How to Check If Your Certificate Has Expired
To verify your certificate's expiration date, visit the FNMT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre) website's certificate verification page. Click the verification request button to view your certificate's validation and expiry information.
Important: Second-Time Renewals
If you are renewing your certificate for a second time, be aware of a critical limitation: the system may reject your renewal, displaying a message that states "it already came from a renovation."
In this case, you have two options:
- Schedule an appointment at a local social security office for identity verification (free)
- Pay €2.99 for an online video identification service
Three-Step Renewal Process
Step 1: Download the Required Software
Visit the FNMT website and navigate to the configuration and software download sections. Check your operating system compatibility and download the appropriate software package.
Step 2: Submit Your Renewal Request
Access the renewal request form on the FNMT website. You will need to:
- Confirm your personal details
- Generate an electronic renewal request
- Select the certificate you wish to renew
- Submit the application
Step 3: Download Your Renewed Certificate
Once your renewal is processed, download the renewed certificate using the renewal codes provided. Create backup copies of your new certificate and store them securely — losing your certificate means going through the full application process again.
Tips for Expats
Keep track of your certificate's expiry date and renew it before it expires — renewing an expired certificate is significantly more complicated than renewing an active one. Set a calendar reminder a few weeks before the four-year mark to give yourself plenty of time.
