EU Pet Passport Comes Into Force April 22 — What You Need to Know About Flying With Pets to and From Spain
New Rules From April 22
From April 22 2026, all dogs and cats travelling within the EU will need a pet passport. The new rules are designed to prevent animal trafficking, avoid discrepancies between national laws, and stop the spread of diseases.
What's in the Pet Passport?
- The animal's microchip number
- Vaccination history
- The owner's identity
- Any veterinary treatments
- The vet's accreditation
Good News for Spanish Pets
Most pets in Spain are already covered. When a pet receives its microchip in Spain, it is legally required to be issued with a pet passport. So if your pet is already microchipped and registered with a Spanish vet, you should already have one.
Spain to UK Travel
EU pet passports are valid for travel between Spain and the UK. However, if your pet doesn't have an EU passport, you must have an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a Spanish vet within 10 days of arrival in the UK.
You also need a signed declaration stating you don't intend to sell your pet. Without the correct documentation, your pet could be quarantined for four months or sent back to Spain.
What Else Is Required?
As well as a pet passport, pets travelling within the EU or to the UK need:
- A rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel
- A tapeworm treatment in the days leading up to travel
- To be over 12 weeks old
Fines of Up to €50,000
Failure to comply with the new rules could result in fines of up to €50,000. If you're planning to travel with your pet this spring or summer, check your documentation now — don't leave it until the airport.
