Easter 2026 Supermarket Opening Hours in Spain: Mercadona, Carrefour, Lidl, Aldi and Día

Plan Your Shopping Before the Holiday Rush

Easter is nearly here, and if you're planning your shopping around Spain's public holidays, it pays to know what you'll find when you turn up at the supermarket. Opening hours vary significantly between chains and between regions — and a wasted journey to a shuttered supermarket is easily avoided with a bit of advance planning.

One key thing to bear in mind: not all public holidays apply everywhere. Maundy Thursday (April 2nd) and Easter Monday (April 6th) are regional holidays in some parts of Spain but normal working days in others. Good Friday (April 3rd) is a public holiday across the whole country — every region, no exceptions.

Also worth noting: Wednesday before Easter and Holy Saturday tend to be the busiest shopping days of the year in Spain. If you can get your main shop done before then, you'll save yourself considerable queuing time.

Mercadona

Mercadona is the most clear-cut of the major chains: it closes on all Sundays and public holidays without exception.

  • Good Friday (April 3rd) — closed across all of Spain
  • Maundy Thursday (April 2nd) — closed in regions where it is a public holiday, including Madrid and Andalucía. Open in the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, where Thursday is a normal working day
  • Easter Monday (April 6th) — closed in the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, where Monday is a regional holiday
  • Wednesday April 1st and Holy Saturday April 4th — open across Spain, 9am to 9:30pm

If Mercadona is your preferred supermarket, Wednesday and Saturday are your safest shopping days over Easter.

Carrefour

Carrefour is the most flexible option over the holiday period. Most of its hypermarkets and supermarkets aim to stay open on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday wherever local regulations allow, generally keeping to normal hours of 9am to 10pm.

Carrefour Express stores and those in busy urban or tourist areas may offer even longer hours. That said, it is still worth checking your specific store, as hours can vary by location and format — the Carrefour website store locator is the most reliable source.

Lidl and Aldi

Both Lidl and Aldi take a middle-ground approach, adapting to local regulations rather than applying a blanket national policy.

  • Maundy Thursday — where closure isn't legally required, many stores will open at least until midday. In regions where Thursday is a holiday, expect closures or severely reduced hours
  • Good Friday — more likely to mean a full closure, although stores in high-tourist areas may be exceptions
  • Holy Saturday — both chains back to normal hours, with larger than usual crowds expected

Use the store locator on each chain's website to check your nearest branch before making the trip.

Día

Día is the most unpredictable of the major chains. Many of its stores operate as franchises, meaning decisions on holiday opening are largely down to individual owners and local regulations. You might find your local Día open for a few hours, open all day, or closed entirely — it genuinely varies.

Always check before making a special journey to a Día store over the Easter period.

The Safest Approach

Whatever chain you use, the most reliable method is to check the store locator on the supermarket's own website before heading out — most of the major chains now show holiday hours directly on their store finder pages.

And if you can manage it, do your main Easter shop before Wednesday April 1st — once the holiday rush hits, queues at every chain will be significantly longer than normal.
