Spain Drivers Warned: New DGT Road Restrictions Roll Out — Solar Eclipse, Cycling and MotoGP
New Restrictions and a Live Map to Track Them
Spain's Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has rolled out a series of road restrictions affecting motorways and national routes across the country in the months ahead, tied to major sporting events and August's total solar eclipse. To help drivers navigate the changes, the DGT has launched a live interactive map at etraffic.dgt.es that updates automatically 24 hours a day, showing current restrictions, road closures, diversions and traffic incidents in real time.
Note that the map covers most of Spain's national network but excludes Catalonia and the Basque Country, where regional authorities manage traffic powers independently.
June 20 — Cycling Closures in Aragon
The first major restriction falls on June 20, when the Ibercaja Quebrantahuesos cycling event will close roads across the Aragon region. The affected routes include:
- N-330, A-23, N-260, N-260A, A-136
- Areas around Sabiñánigo, Jaca, Biescas and the French border region
Drivers planning to cross into France via the Pyrenees on that date should plan alternative routes well in advance.
August — Total Solar Eclipse Across Nine Regions
The most significant disruption is expected on August 12, when a total solar eclipse is set to attract large numbers of people to the regions where visibility will be strongest. Traffic controls and restrictions are planned across:
- Aragon
- Asturias
- Balearic Islands
- Castilla-La Mancha
- Castilla y León
- Galicia
- Madrid
- La Rioja
- Valencian Community
For anyone on the Costa Blanca or travelling through the Valencian Community on August 12, significant road congestion and access restrictions should be expected.
August — Descenso del Sella, Asturias
The famous Descenso del Sella canoe race in Asturias will also bring additional traffic controls to the region during August, with specific dates to be confirmed closer to the event.
Later in the Year — MotoGP Events
Two MotoGP events will bring road restrictions later in 2026:
- Valencian Grand Prix — Cheste, near Valencia (November)
- Aragon MotoGP — Alcañiz, Teruel
Plan Ahead with etraffic.dgt.es
The DGT's live map at etraffic.dgt.es is the most reliable tool for checking current and upcoming restrictions before any journey. Checking it before long road trips during peak summer travel periods is strongly recommended.
