Two Earthquakes Strike Murcia Region in Early Hours of Wednesday Morning
2.2 Magnitude Quake Strikes Cieza
A mild earthquake registering 2.2 on the Richter scale struck Cieza in the Murcia region at 1:38am on Wednesday, May 6, according to Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN). The tremor's epicentre was located 13 kilometres below the surface. No damage or injuries were reported.
Second Tremor Hours Later
A second seismic event followed later that same morning — a 1.5 magnitude tremor recorded between Alhama de Murcia and Totana at 4:55am. This second quake was notably shallower, at a depth of just 1 kilometre, though again no damage or injuries were reported.
Context
The Murcia region sits in one of Spain's more seismically active zones. Minor earthquakes are a regular occurrence across the area, and the IGN monitors seismic activity continuously. Events below 3.0 on the Richter scale are generally not felt widely and rarely cause any structural damage.
