Bogus Football Agent Charged Young Players €3k Each With Lies About Joining La Liga Clubs

Dreams Sold for €3,000

A man has been arrested in Madrid for defrauding young South American footballers of up to €3,000 each with bogus promises of placing them in top La Liga clubs.

The Policía Nacional detained him for fraud, document forgery and involvement in illegal immigration.

How the Scam Worked

The scammer offered young players the chance to travel to Spain with the correct papers and the promise of playing for one of the country's most prestigious football clubs. After an initial approach, he contacted victims directly, assuring them he had contacts in La Liga clubs who could get them signed.

He packaged the con as a "unique opportunity" to develop professional careers in football, with promises of making a lot of money. To make their dreams come true, he demanded payments of up to €3,000 to cover travel, accommodation and maintenance for three months in Spain.

Fake Documents and Coaching at Border Control

The arrested man provided victims with documents called "invitation commitments", allegedly issued by different clubs, which claimed the players could be playing for the senior team within three months. The fake papers even stated that clubs would cover all expenses.

He supplied plane tickets to Spain and gave tips on how to behave at border controls — instructing victims to say they were travelling for sporting reasons and to show the forged documents as proof.

Abandoned and Penniless

Once in Spain, the reality was very different. The players were taken to lower-league clubs that provided temporary accommodation and food. But once trials ended — and without proper football federation licences — the victims were kicked out.

The scammer then took them to hostels and left them to fend for themselves. Several players, left without money, had to apply for loans from their home countries to pay off the agent's demands.

He also made victims sign supposed representation contracts giving him 10% of any future earnings.

At Least Six Victims Identified

The Policía Nacional investigation identified at least six victims and discovered that others had been recruited in Europe, including Italy, through the same fake promises.

It's not the first case of its kind in Spain — similar scams targeting young footballers with dreams of making it in European football have been uncovered in recent years.
