Alicante Train Station Set for Major Transformation Under Central Park Project
A €20.2 Million Railway Transformation
Alicante's railway station is undergoing its most significant transformation to date, as part of the city's ambitious Central Park project — a broader initiative to reshape Alicante around housing, accessibility, and modern transport infrastructure.
The project, backed by €20.2 million in investment, will see the historic terminal restored to its original architectural style while being integrated with a brand new structure designed specifically for high-speed rail passengers. Work commenced last year, with completion expected in the first half of 2027.
Old and New Brought Together
Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente outlined the vision as creating "a single connected station, bringing the old and new structures together so they function as one unified transport hub."
The modern high-speed terminal will be constructed where the taxi rank currently operates, though the existing post office building on the site remains under review. The restored historic terminal will sit alongside the new build, giving Alicante a station that respects its architectural heritage while meeting the demands of 21st-century rail travel.
14 Tracks: A Major Mediterranean Rail Hub
Upon completion, Alicante station will feature 14 total tracks:
- 10 high-speed service tracks — for AVE and other high-speed connections
- 4 regional train tracks — for Cercanías and regional services
The infrastructure work involves adding three new standard gauge tracks and converting three existing Iberian gauge lines to standard gauge, substantially increasing the station's capacity and compatibility with European rail standards.
Minister Puente characterised the result as transforming Alicante into "one of the most important rail hubs in the Mediterranean" — a significant upgrade for a city that has long been underserved relative to its size and the number of residents and visitors it serves.
What This Means for Alicante
For the hundreds of thousands of residents, expats, and tourists who use Alicante as their base on the Costa Blanca, the upgraded station promises:
- Better high-speed connections — with 10 dedicated tracks, capacity for AVE services to Madrid, Barcelona, and other major cities will increase significantly
- Improved regional services — 4 dedicated regional tracks should mean more reliable Cercanías and local train services
- A unified station experience — no more confusion between separate terminals; everything under one connected roof
- A restored historic building — the original terminal architecture preserved and celebrated
The Central Park project as a whole aims to transform the area around the station into a more liveable, accessible part of the city — with the upgraded rail hub at its heart.
