Alexa+ Arrives in Spain with a Smarter, More Natural Way to Help at Home
Alexa Gets a Major Upgrade — and Spain Is One of the First Markets
Amazon has launched Alexa+ in Spain, beginning with an Early Access phase that opened on April 23, 2026. The upgraded assistant represents a significant step beyond the original Alexa — moving from a voice command tool to a more conversational, context-aware AI that can understand natural language and take action across your home without requiring precise instructions.
Spain is already one of Alexa's strongest markets, with the assistant used in one in four Spanish households and racking up more than 27 billion interactions over the past three years. Alexa+ is designed to deepen that relationship considerably.
What's New in Alexa+
The headline change is the way Alexa+ interprets language. Rather than needing specific commands, the upgraded assistant understands natural, contextual speech. Say "it's a bit warm in here" and Alexa+ will activate your fans. Say "the floor is dirty" and it will start your robot vacuum. The gap between intention and action narrows significantly.
Beyond that, Alexa+ can now handle a much broader range of tasks:
- Calendar management — scheduling, reminders and coordination
- Security monitoring — linked to compatible cameras and sensors
- Pet and parcel tracking — keeping tabs on deliveries and animals via connected devices
- Clothing assessment — using camera-equipped devices
- Recipe suggestions — tailored to your dietary needs and allergy requirements
- Price comparisons — checking costs across retailers before you buy
- Document management — via integration with a dedicated alexa@alexa.com email address
Built in Spain, for Spain
Amazon has emphasised the local dimension of the launch. The infrastructure powering Alexa+ in Spain runs through data centres in Aragon, and the company's Country Manager, Andrés Pazos, was direct about what that means:
"From today, Alexa is Spanish" — operating as "authentically local."
General Manager Ruth Díaz reinforced the point: "The brain of Alexa+ is in the data centres of Aragon."
The Spanish-language capabilities and locally hosted infrastructure are intended to make the experience feel genuinely tailored to the Spanish market rather than a translated version of a US product.
Pricing and Compatibility
During the Early Access phase, Alexa+ is free. After the full launch, it will cost €22.99 per month — though Amazon Prime members get it included at no extra cost, which is a significant sweetener given Prime's large subscriber base in Spain.
Crucially for existing Alexa users, Alexa+ is compatible with 98% of Echo devices already in use in Spain, meaning most households won't need to buy new hardware to access the upgraded experience.
Users wanting to join the Early Access programme can register for an invitation online through Amazon's Spanish website.
What It Means for Expats in Spain
For English-speaking expats, it's worth noting that Alexa has long supported multiple languages on the same device — and Alexa+ continues that. The upgrade to more natural language processing should benefit non-native Spanish speakers, who may find conversational commands easier than trying to remember exact phrasing.
With 56 million hours of music streamed monthly on Alexa devices in Spain and the assistant already embedded in millions of homes, Alexa+ represents a meaningful evolution in how people interact with their living spaces — relevant for anyone who has an Echo device gathering dust because the original Alexa was too limited to be genuinely useful.
